About Us

South Fraser Track & Field Club was formed in January, 1966 when three families – the Priors, the Gledhills and the McNays – attended an organizational meeting at Dave Prior’s home. Dave Prior became the first Club President by acclamation and the club was on its way to becoming a reality! With no equipment or financial resources and a cinder track without lights, the initial winter months brought athletes, parents and coach closely together with a strong resolve to build a successful community-based track club.

The Cloverdale Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion became the club’s financial angel when it provided support for travel, equipment and officials at competitions. Build it and they will come was their moto – and indeed they came. Local high school coaches sent athletes, officiated at track and cross country meets, and attended club sponsored coaches’ clinics.

By the end of their first season, South Fraser Track and Field Club had fifteen athletes, twelve distance runners and three very good sprinters. Over the next few seasons, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers joined the club and Graeme Cooper was added to the coaching group.

In 2013, South Fraser Track and Field Club took a bold step towards elevating track and field in the Lower Mainland by retaining two time World Champion and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist, Robert Esmie, as the club’s head coach.  As SFTC’s head coach, Robert has put together a strong “think outside the box” coaching team that is athlete focused.

As a club, South Fraser plans to develop its roots within Surrey’s community by creating a healthy lifestyle and competitive athletic opportunities for the community.

Our Focus

Athlete-Focused

At South Fraser everything we do is to fulfill the goal of supporting and uplifting our athletes.

High Standards for Athletes

We have high expectations for our athletes.  This includes respecting our club, competitors and the competition.  It also involves following our coach’s nutrition and training homework.

Individually Competitive

Our athletes compete to bring out the best in themselves. “You have competition every day because you set such high standards for yourself that you have to go out every day and live up to that.

Parent-Driven

At South Fraser parent support and involvement is essential for the success of the athletes and club as a whole.

High Performance Coaching

We are wholly focused on bringing in the best coaches and trainers.  Led by Olympic Gold Medallist Robert Esmie, SFTC has formed a top-notch team that has achieved incredible results with our athletes.

Supported by the Team

The combination of club, coach, parent, and fellow-athlete support is integral to the success of our athletes. South Fraser’s model and vision is realized by the working together of all of these parts and is responsible for our success on and off the track.
